India Launches Offensive to Dismantle Haji Salim’s Global Drug Cartel

India Launches Offensive to Dismantle Haji Salim’s Global Drug Cartel

In a landmark operation, India’s Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) launched Operation Sagar Manthan, targeting the global drug trafficking network led by the elusive Haji Salim, infamously known as the "Lord of Drugs." Acting on directives from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the operation uncovered nearly 4,000 kilograms of illicit drugs, directly linked to Salim’s sprawling syndicate. Several Pakistani nationals have been apprehended, marking a significant blow to one of the world's largest narcotics cartels.

Haji Salim, also called Haji Baloch, orchestrates a sophisticated drug pipeline spanning Asia, Africa, and the West. According to NCB Deputy Director General Gyaneshwar Singh, “Salim’s network is unparalleled in scale, trafficking heroin, methamphetamine, and other narcotics. He is also suspected of funding cross-border terrorism, destabilizing the region.”

Salim’s operations rely heavily on maritime smuggling, with shipments often marked with identifiers like "777," "555," or "Flying Horse," signaling their origin. His routes typically originate in Iran and Afghanistan, pass through Malaysia, and reach Sri Lanka before smaller vessels distribute the drugs across India’s coastlines under cover of darkness.

Linked to fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim, Salim allegedly operates under the protection of Pakistan's ISI, which reportedly provides him with satellite phones to coordinate smuggling operations. Intelligence reports suggest he recruits unemployed youth from Balochistan to execute his trafficking missions.

Salim’s empire first came to light in 2015 when Indian authorities intercepted a massive drug haul off Kerala’s coast. Since then, the NCB has seized narcotics worth over ?40,000 crores, yet Salim’s operations persisted, earning him the moniker "Raktbeej" for his ability to regenerate his network.

As multiple international law enforcement agencies collaborate to dismantle Salim’s cartel, Operation Sagar Manthan signals a decisive step in combating the drug menace and its ties to terrorism.
