Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday emphasized India's critical role in global affairs, confirming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the upcoming G7 Leaders Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, later this month. As chair of the G7, Carney underscored that India’s participation is essential, given its status as the fifth-largest economy and the world’s most populous nation.
Speaking to the media, PM Carney highlighted the summit’s agenda, which includes key global challenges such as energy security, the digital economy, critical minerals, and infrastructure development in emerging economies. “India is central to a number of global supply chains and must have a seat at the table for these vital discussions,” he said.
In a post on X, PM Modi confirmed his attendance, expressing optimism about renewed collaboration with Canada. “Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister Mark J Carney… India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests,” Modi wrote.
The announcement marks a thaw in bilateral ties that had been severely strained since Canada accused Indian agents of involvement in the June 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen and pro-Khalistan activist. The diplomatic fallout had led to a breakdown in dialogue and mutual recriminations.
However, Carney noted that both nations have now resumed law enforcement cooperation, a move he termed as progress. “We’ve agreed to a continued dialogue between law enforcement agencies. Prime Minister Modi accepted my invitation to the summit in that context,” he stated.
India’s presence at the G7 reflects its growing global influence and the international community’s recognition of its strategic importance across economic, security, and technological domains.
