Ranchi: Hemant Soren was sworn in as Chief Minister of Jharkhand this evening, marking the end of a five-month political journey that began in January when he resigned just before his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate over a land fraud case worth crores. In June, he was granted bail by a High Court that found no direct evidence of his involvement in the alleged scam.
After taking the oath, Mr. Soren stated, "Since 2019, the present 'mahagathbandan' government has worked in the people's interest. During the political turmoil, Champai Soren carried forward these initiatives... because I was in jail. (Now) due to the court's order, I could come out..."
Mr. Soren's wife, Kalpana Soren, who was once considered a potential interim leader, expressed confidence that her husband would continue his dedication to the people. She also issued a caution to the party with the state election looming. "We have less time now," Mrs. Soren told the press.
Hemant Soren was sworn in at 5 pm at Raj Bhavan, with his father, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha patriarch and former Chief Minister, Shibu Soren, in attendance. Shortly before the ceremony, he met his father, saying, "Met respected baba and took his blessings to deal with upcoming challenges."
Cabinet ministers are scheduled to be sworn in on Sunday.
