Amazon's Jeff Bezos Surpasses Tesla's Elon Musk as Richest Man

Amazon's Jeff Bezos Surpasses Tesla's Elon Musk as Richest Man

Elon Musk's reign as the world's richest person came to an end as Jeff Bezos reclaimed the top spot on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. This shift occurred after Tesla Inc. shares plummeted by 7.2% on Monday, reducing Musk's net worth to $197.7 billion, while Bezos' fortune rose to $200.3 billion. It marks Bezos' return to the ranking's pinnacle for the first time since 2021.

The wealth gap between Musk and Bezos, once as vast as $142 billion, has been narrowing as Amazon and Tesla stocks move in opposite directions. While Amazon shares have surged by over 100% since late 2022, Tesla has experienced a decline of around 50% from its 2021 peak.

Tesla's share price decline on Monday followed reports of decreased shipments from its Shanghai factory. In contrast, Amazon saw robust online sales growth, particularly notable given the ongoing pandemic.

Musk's financial prospects face additional challenges following a Delaware judge's decision to invalidate his $55 billion pay package at Tesla. This move favored an investor who contested Musk's compensation plan, which had been historically large. Musk's assets, including options, are a significant component of his wealth, alongside his stakes in Tesla and SpaceX.

Bezos' wealth primarily stems from his 9% stake in Amazon, making him the company's largest shareholder. Despite selling 50 million shares worth about $8.5 billion last month, Bezos maintains a substantial position in the e-commerce giant.

Bezos has previously held the title of the world's richest person, having first surpassed Bill Gates in 2017. However, he faced stiff competition from Musk throughout much of 2021, with Tesla's stock rally propelling Musk to the forefront. Bezos only recently regained the top position.

Bernard Arnault, chairman of LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, also features prominently among the world's wealthiest individuals, boasting a net worth of $197.5 billion.

Bezos' resurgence as the richest person underscores the dynamic nature of wealth rankings, which can fluctuate based on stock performance, business decisions, and legal developments.
