US Senator Targets India Over Russian Oil Trade After Deadly Ukraine Strikes

US Senator Lindsey Graham has renewed his criticism of India, China, Brazil and other countries purchasing Russian oil, accusing them of indirectly fueling Moscow’s ongoing war in Ukraine. His remarks came hours after Russia launched a massive missile barrage on Kyiv early Thursday, killing at least 23 civilians, including children.

“India, China, Brazil and others who prop up Putin’s war machine by buying cheap Russian oil: how do you feel right now that your purchases have resulted in innocent civilians, including children, being killed?” Graham wrote on X. He added that India was already “experiencing the cost” of its oil trade with Moscow through punitive tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump and warned that others could face similar consequences.

The senator has consistently argued that Russia’s ability to wage war depends on oil and gas revenue. “Without oil and gas revenue, Russia collapses. The whole goal is to crush its customers – India, China, Brazil,” he told NBC earlier this month.

The comments came against the backdrop of heightened global diplomatic maneuvering. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Trump was “not happy but not surprised” by the Russian strike, noting that both Ukraine and Russia had inflicted heavy damage on each other’s energy infrastructure. “Perhaps both sides are not ready to end it themselves,” she remarked, while stressing that Trump wanted the conflict resolved.

The strike, one of the largest since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, came less than two weeks after Trump hosted President Vladimir Putin in Alaska for peace talks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy condemned the assault as Moscow’s rejection of diplomacy. “Russia chooses ballistics instead of the negotiating table,” he posted, urging fresh sanctions against Moscow.

The Kremlin insisted its strikes targeted military-industrial sites and reiterated its interest in negotiations.
