A political firestorm erupted Monday as President Donald Trump lashed out at Elon Musk amid growing tensions over the administration’s flagship spending legislation—the $4.5 trillion "One Big Beautiful Bill." Trump threatened to pull federal subsidies from Musk’s companies, suggesting the billionaire “would probably have to close up shop and head back home” to South Africa without government support.
Musk, formerly Trump's advisor and head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) until May, hit back swiftly. "I am literally saying CUT IT ALL. Now," he posted on X, daring the President to follow through.
The feud stems from Musk’s vocal opposition to the bill, which includes extended tax cuts, massive spending increases, and deep cuts to healthcare. As the Senate prepared to vote, Musk renewed calls for a new political party, accusing Republicans of “debt slavery” and reckless spending. “What’s the point of a debt ceiling if we keep raising it?” he asked.
Trump responded by questioning Musk’s loyalty and suggesting DOGE should investigate Tesla and SpaceX. “Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history,” he posted on Truth Social. “No more rocket launches, satellites, or electric car production, and our country would save a FORTUNE.”
The President also reignited his opposition to electric vehicle mandates. “Electric cars are fine, but not everyone should be forced to own one,” he said.
Trump’s sweeping bill, designed to cement his legacy, faces sharp resistance within his own party, with some Republicans concerned about ballooning debt and electoral backlash in 2026.
As the political standoff deepens, the clash between Trump and Musk—two titans of influence—has turned into a high-stakes battle over the future of fiscal policy, technology, and the very soul of the Republican Party.
