Trump Signals Restart of India-US Trade Talks, Calls Modi “A Very Good Friend”

Trump Signals Restart of India-US Trade Talks, Calls Modi “A Very Good Friend”

United States President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced that Washington and New Delhi will resume negotiations aimed at resolving trade frictions between the two nations.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, President Trump said he was “pleased to announce that India and the United States of America are continuing negotiations to address the trade barriers between our two Nations.” He added that he looked forward to speaking with Prime Minister Narendra Modi “in the upcoming weeks,” expressing confidence that discussions would lead to a “successful conclusion for both of our Great Countries.”

The announcement follows recent US tariff measures— a 50 per cent levy on Indian goods along with a 25 per cent penalty on imports of Russian oil— moves that have unsettled bilateral trade ties.

Earlier this week, addressing the media at the White House, President Trump described the India-US partnership as a “very special relationship,” affirming his personal friendship with Prime Minister Modi. “I’ll always be friends with Modi. He’s a great Prime Minister,” Trump said, though he admitted he was “not pleased with what he is doing at this particular moment.”

When asked about geopolitical shifts, including fears of India and Russia moving closer to China, Trump dismissed such concerns, stating, “I don’t think that has happened.”

Responding warmly, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the resilience of India-US ties. In a post on X, he said he “deeply appreciates and fully reciprocates” Trump’s sentiments, calling the relationship “forward-looking” and rooted in a “Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership.”

The exchange underscores both leaders’ intent to preserve momentum in bilateral relations despite temporary frictions over trade and energy policy.
