Trump Hints at "Very Big" Trade Deal with India Amid Strengthening Bilateral Ties

In a recent address at the White House's ‘Big Beautiful Event,’ US President Donald Trump hinted at a potentially monumental trade agreement with India, describing it as a "very big one" in the pipeline. The comment comes on the heels of four-day high-level negotiations between Indian and American officials focused on enhancing trade relations and reducing barriers.

“We just signed a great deal with China, and now we might have one coming up with India. A very big one,” Trump said, expressing optimism about the direction of the Indo-US economic partnership. However, he also clarified that the US would not engage in trade deals with every nation, stating, “Some we’re just going to send a letter—thank you, pay 25, 35, 45 per cent.”

The negotiations, which concluded on June 10, revolved around greater market access for industrial and agricultural products, tariff reductions, and addressing non-tariff barriers. The Indian team was led by Rajesh Agrawal from the Commerce Ministry, while the US delegation was headed by officials from the Office of the US Trade Representative.

Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal affirmed that the agreement, once finalized, would reflect mutual benefit and fairness. "Our leaders, Prime Minister Modi and President Trump, are committed to a balanced and equitable trade deal," he stated.

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick also signaled that the two sides were close to reaching consensus on several key issues.

President Trump also announced a signed trade deal with China focused on accelerating rare earth exports to the US, following months of trade standstill.

The India-US trade deal aims to scale up bilateral trade from $190 billion to $500 billion by 2030, marking a major leap in strategic economic cooperation.
