Supreme Court Withholds Bail for Kejriwal Amidst Money Laundering Probe

Supreme Court Withholds Bail for Kejriwal Amidst Money Laundering Probe

The Supreme Court is yet to deliver its verdict on interim bail for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 over money laundering allegations related to the purported liquor policy scandal.

In previous hearings, the court acknowledged that Kejriwal is not a habitual offender and considered granting him interim bail, particularly to enable him to campaign for his party in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. The court emphasized the extraordinary circumstances due to the elections and Kejriwal's status as the elected Chief Minister of Delhi.

However, the court also expressed concerns over Kejriwal's potential involvement in official duties if granted bail, noting the allegations by the Enforcement Directorate regarding his role in formulating the liquor excise policy. The bench, comprising Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Dipankar Datta, highlighted the possible ramifications of releasing Kejriwal amidst his governmental responsibilities.

Despite recognizing Kejriwal's position and the importance of public interest, the court remained cautious about the potential consequences of allowing him to participate in electoral activities while being entangled in governance issues under investigation.
