In a major shift marking the dawn of a new era in Indian cricket, Shubman Gill has been appointed the new captain of the Indian Test team. The announcement was made on Saturday by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as they unveiled the squad for the upcoming Test series against England.
Wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant, returning to form and fitness, has been named the new vice-captain, edging out senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah from the leadership group. The changes come in the wake of the recent Test retirements of legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, closing a chapter in Indian cricket and opening the door to a youthful leadership core.
The squad selection, led by chief selector Ajit Agarkar, also saw notable omissions. Mohammed Shami and Shreyas Iyer have been left out, with no official reason given yet, though fitness and form could be contributing factors.
India's new-look squad is a blend of youth and experience. Alongside regulars like Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, and KL Rahul, the team includes promising talents such as B Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, and Nitish Reddy. The bowling unit is bolstered by Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, and Arshdeep Singh, with Kuldeep Yadav providing spin options.
The selectors appear to be investing in a long-term vision, placing trust in Gill’s composure and Pant’s aggressive instincts to shape the future of Indian Test cricket.
