Russia Launches Largest Aerial Assault on Ukraine Since Start of War

In a dramatic escalation of hostilities, Russia launched its most extensive aerial attack on Ukraine overnight, marking a grim milestone in the ongoing three-year war. Ukraine’s air force reported that 537 aerial weapons were fired, including 477 drones and 60 missiles. Of these, 249 were intercepted, while 226 were likely deflected through electronic jamming.

"This was the most massive airstrike since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in February 2022," said Yuriy Ihnat, spokesperson for Ukraine’s air force. The assault targeted multiple regions across Ukraine, including the western territories far removed from the front lines.

In response, Poland and other NATO-aligned nations scrambled aircraft to secure their airspace amid rising regional tensions.

The bombardment caused casualties and destruction across the country. In Kherson and Kharkiv, drone strikes claimed two lives, while in Cherkasy, six people—including a child—were injured. In Lviv’s Drohobych city, a drone strike ignited a fire at an industrial facility and disrupted power supply.

Ukraine also suffered a significant loss when an F-16 fighter jet, supplied by Western allies, crashed after taking damage while intercepting Russian air targets. The pilot did not survive.

Meanwhile, Russia reported that it had downed seven Ukrainian drones over its Bryansk region, where two civilians were injured. Russia's defence ministry also claimed control of Novoukrainka village in Donetsk, underscoring its slow, grinding advance along the 1,000-kilometre front line—achieved at a heavy cost.

Despite mounting destruction, Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated Moscow’s willingness to resume peace talks in Istanbul. However, diplomatic efforts remain stalled, with recent negotiations in Turkey yielding no substantial progress.

As both nations ramp up their deployment of advanced drones, the battlefield has increasingly become a proving ground for next-generation warfare, pushing hopes for peace further out of reach.
