PM Modi’s Gulf Diplomacy: Key Agreements on Horizon in Saudi Arabia

PM Modi’s Gulf Diplomacy: Key Agreements on Horizon in Saudi Arabia

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a landmark visit to Jeddah on Tuesday at the invitation of Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud. This marks the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Jeddah in four decades and underscores the deepening strategic partnership between the two nations.

During the visit, India and Saudi Arabia are expected to sign at least six significant memoranda of understanding (MoUs), with discussions continuing until late Monday to finalise more agreements. Sources indicate that over a dozen MoUs across diverse sectors, including space, energy, health, science, culture, and advanced technology, are under active negotiation.

Modi will also discuss the annual Hajj pilgrimage, particularly India’s rising quota and logistical challenges. While India’s quota for 2025 has increased to 175,025, delays by Combined Haj Group Operators may prevent around 42,000 pilgrims from performing Hajj this year. Coordination on this front remains a vital agenda item in bilateral talks.

The visit will include the second meeting of the India-Saudi Arabia Strategic Partnership Council, co-chaired by PM Modi and the Crown Prince. This council, established during Modi’s 2019 trip, aims to boost collaboration in trade, investment, and defence.

Indian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Suhel Ajaz Khan emphasised Jeddah’s historical and cultural significance as a gateway to Mecca and a centuries-old hub of Indo-Saudi trade.

PM Modi, who was conferred with Saudi Arabia’s highest civilian honour in 2016, will also visit a local factory employing Indian workers on Wednesday, reflecting the strong human and economic ties between the two nations.

The visit is expected to herald a new chapter in bilateral cooperation, reinforcing India’s growing role in West Asia’s strategic landscape.
