Israel Strike On Yemen Port Escalate Tensions in Middle East

Israel Strike On Yemen Port Escalate Tensions in Middle East

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has issued a stern warning to anyone "doubting" Israel after Israeli warplanes killed three people in the Houthi-controlled Yemeni port of Hodeida. The strikes on the key port are Israel's first in the Arabian peninsula's poorest country and were in "direct response" to Iran-backed rebels' drone attack in Tel Aviv on Friday, which killed an Israeli civilian.

"I have a simple message for Israel's enemies: Do not doubt Israel's determination to defend itself on every front. All those who seek to harm us will pay a very heavy price for their aggression," Netanyahu said in a televised address. He emphasized that the port targeted was not an "innocent port," stating it was used as an entry point for weapons supplied by Iran to Houthi terrorists. These weapons have been used to attack Israel and other Arab states.

From the beginning of the war, Netanyahu had made it clear that Israel would act against all those who attack them. He stated that he asked the Israeli cabinet to back his decision to strike Houthi targets in Yemen. This strike was in direct response to the drone attack that killed one person and injured several others near the US Consulate in Tel Aviv. Netanyahu noted that the Houthis have launched hundreds of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones against Israel over the past eight months.

While defensive measures have intercepted many projectiles, Netanyahu argued that Friday's drone attack demonstrated the need for offensive action to curtail the Houthis and ensure Iran's proxies pay for their aggression. He thanked the United States, Britain, France, and other international coalition members for their support against Houthi attacks.

The Israeli strikes killed three people and wounded 87 at Hodeida port, targeting "fuel storage facilities and a power plant" to pressure Yemen to stop supporting Palestinians in Gaza, according to top Houthi official Mohammed Abdulsalam. Hodeida port, a vital entry point for imports and international aid, had largely remained untouched during the decade-long war between the Houthis and the Saudi-backed government. Hezbollah, the Houthis' Lebanese ally, warned that these strikes marked a dangerous turn in the Gaza conflict.
