Iran’s Supreme Leader Proclaims Israel’s Demise in First Public Sermon in Years

Iran’s Supreme Leader Proclaims Israel’s Demise in First Public Sermon in Years

In a rare Friday sermon, Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, declared that Israel "won't last long," offering strong support for Palestinian and Lebanese groups opposing Israel. Addressing tens of thousands in Tehran, Khamenei justified missile strikes on Israel as a “public service” and predicted Israel’s eventual defeat at the hands of Hamas and Hezbollah. A gun by his side, Khamenei’s speech emphasized defiance amid rising tensions and ongoing hostilities.

Khamenei paid tribute to Hassan Nasrallah, the former Hezbollah chief, who was recently killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut. He praised Nasrallah's leadership in the fight against Israel, calling him a "high-standing flag against the Zionist enemy" and vowed that his legacy would continue to inspire future resistance. Khamenei urged Muslims globally to support Lebanon’s struggle and the defense of the al-Aqsa mosque.

Calling Hamas' October 7 attacks on Israel "the correct move," Khamenei said that international law cannot oppose Palestinians and Lebanese defending themselves against Israeli occupation. He labeled Israel a “tool” for U.S. control in the region and dismissed the Zionist state as unstable and illegitimate, sustained only by American support.

This was Khamenei’s first Friday sermon in five years, and it took place just days after Iran launched 180 missiles targeting critical infrastructure in Israel. His return to the pulpit comes at a critical time, three days before the anniversary of the Israel-Gaza war and amid escalating threats against his life from Israel, which has vowed retaliation.

Iran has long been a key backer of both Hamas and Hezbollah, groups that are actively engaged in the conflict with Israel on its southern and northern fronts, as tensions continue to rise in the region.
