India beats Sri Lanka in Galle

India strengthened its campaign for a place in the World Test Championship (WTC) final with a commanding 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test at Galle on Wednesday. Chasing 372 for victory, Sri Lanka were dismissed for 206 on the fifth and final day, handing India a crucial win in the ongoing WTC cycle.

The standout performer for India was left-arm spinner Manav Suthar, who delivered another match-winning performance. He claimed 6/55 in the second innings, completing his second five-wicket haul in as many matches. Suthar finished the Test with impressive figures of 10/131, underlining his growing importance to India's bowling attack.

Despite the comprehensive victory, India remained fifth in the WTC standings. However, their points percentage (PCT) improved significantly, rising from 48.15 to 53.33. Sri Lanka continued to occupy sixth place, but their PCT slipped to 33.33 following the defeat.

India's position could have improved further, but Bangladesh's historic victory over Australia in the opening Test of their series in Darwin last week kept them ahead in fourth place. The result has made India's path to the WTC final considerably more difficult.

India will have seven Tests remaining after the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo, which begins on August 23. The Shubman Gill-led team has already suffered four defeats in 10 matches, leaving virtually no room for further setbacks.

Following the Sri Lanka series, India will travel to New Zealand in November for a two-Test series. Their WTC campaign will conclude with a five-Test home series against Australia next year, scheduled before the Indian Premier League window.

With Bangladesh making significant gains, India now need an exceptional run of results to keep their final hopes alive. Winning all their remaining Tests would provide the strongest possible finish. Even seven victories from their final eight matches would leave India with a PCT of 68.52, while six wins and two defeats would reduce it to 62.96.

These calculations assume India avoid any penalty points for slow over-rates or other breaches. Consequently, every remaining Test carries enormous significance, and the Gill-led side can afford virtually no mistakes if they are to secure a place in the WTC final.
