India and Ghana Elevate Ties to Comprehensive Partnership Level

India and Ghana Elevate Ties to Comprehensive Partnership Level

In a landmark development, India and Ghana on Wednesday elevated their bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Partnership, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirming New Delhi’s commitment as a co-traveller in Ghana’s development journey. This historic visit marks the first by an Indian prime minister to the West African nation in over three decades.

After wide-ranging talks with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, Prime Minister Modi announced a shared vision to double bilateral trade over the next five years. Indian investments in Ghana already stand at nearly $2 billion across 900 projects, underscoring the depth of economic engagement.

Four MoUs were signed during the visit, covering cooperation in culture, traditional medicine, and digital infrastructure. Modi highlighted India's readiness to share its digital public infrastructure expertise, including UPI-based fintech solutions, to support Ghana’s financial inclusion efforts.

In a significant step towards resource collaboration, both nations agreed to explore joint ventures in the mining of critical minerals. Defence and security cooperation will also expand under the principle of "security through solidarity", focusing on armed forces training, maritime safety, cyber security, and counter-terrorism.

On global issues, Modi and Mahama expressed shared concerns over conflicts in West Asia and Europe, advocating for dialogue and diplomacy over war. They also pledged continued advocacy for the Global South, acknowledging Ghana’s participation in the Voice of Global South Summit and India's successful G20 presidency, which secured permanent membership for the African Union.

Modi assured Ghana of India’s full support as it undergoes significant economic restructuring. With strong people-to-people ties and mutual interests in development, security, and global cooperation, the Comprehensive Partnership ushers in a new chapter in India-Ghana relations, promising inclusive growth and shared progress.
