Gaza School Hit by Israeli Strike, 30 Dead; Israel Says Hamas Inside

The Israeli military reported a deadly strike on a UN school in Gaza on Thursday, claiming it targeted a Hamas compound. The strike killed at least 27 people, according to Hamas, and injured dozens more. The military stated that the operation "eliminated" several "terrorists" and described the strike as a precise hit on a Hamas facility embedded within the UNRWA school in Nuseirat, central Gaza. UNRWA is the UN agency responsible for Palestinian refugees.

Hamas condemned the attack as a "horrific massacre... that shames humanity." This conflict, the bloodiest ever in Gaza, was triggered by Hamas's October 7 attack on southern Israel, which left 1,194 people dead, mostly civilians, according to Israeli official figures compiled by AFP. The combatants also took 251 hostages, with 120 still in Gaza, including 41 confirmed dead by the Israeli army.

In retaliation, Israel's bombardment and ground offensive have resulted in at least 36,586 deaths in Gaza, primarily civilians, as reported by Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry. Israel faces increasing diplomatic isolation due to its conduct in the war, with legal cases against it in two international courts and recognition of a Palestinian state by several European governments.

Israel has often accused Hamas and its allies of using civilian infrastructure, such as schools and health facilities, as operational centers—a charge that Hamas denies. UNRWA, coordinating nearly all aid to Gaza, has been in crisis since January when Israel accused about a dozen of its 13,000 employees in the territory of involvement in the October 7 attack.
