CP Radhakrishnan Is BJP's Vice President Candidate

CP Radhakrishnan Is BJP's Vice President Candidate

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Sunday named CP Radhakrishnan, the Governor of Maharashtra, as its candidate for the post of Vice President, weeks after Jagdeep Dhankhar stepped down amid a string of controversies.

Announcing the decision, BJP president JP Nadda said Mr. Radhakrishnan brought with him “over four decades of political and administrative experience,” having “worn many hats with dignity and dedication.”

A seasoned leader from Tamil Nadu, Radhakrishnan’s nomination is widely viewed as a strategic political signal ahead of next year’s Assembly elections in the southern state. By fielding a Tamil face for one of the highest constitutional offices, the BJP is attempting to strengthen its presence in a region where the DMK and AIADMK have long dominated the political landscape.

Radhakrishnan’s journey reflects the party’s deep-rooted connect with grassroots politics. He joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at the age of 16 and gradually rose through the ranks of the BJP and its precursor, the Jan Sangh. Over the years, he has served in multiple key roles: as Governor of Jharkhand, additional charge of Puducherry, two-term Lok Sabha MP from Coimbatore, and president of the Tamil Nadu BJP. His reputation as an affable yet firm leader contrasts sharply with that of his predecessor Dhankhar, whose combative tenure frequently made headlines.

Political observers believe his candidature is designed to appeal both to the Tamil electorate and to the NDA’s southern allies, while also projecting an image of balance and maturity at the top constitutional level.

If elected, Radhakrishnan would become the second Vice President from Tamil Nadu, after S. Radhakrishnan, who later became the President of India. His nomination, therefore, carries both political weight and historical resonance.
