Canada's Allegations Spark Indian Diplomatic Summons Amid Rising Tensions

Canada's Allegations Spark Indian Diplomatic Summons Amid Rising Tensions

India has firmly dismissed claims made by Canada regarding allegations that Home Minister Amit Shah directed actions against Khalistani extremists, calling them "absurd and baseless." This statement follows remarks by Canada’s Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister David Morrison to a parliamentary committee.

In response, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs summoned a representative from the Canadian High Commission, conveying strong protests against Morrison's assertions. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that Canada’s officials had leaked sensitive information to the media, warning that such actions could significantly harm diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Jaiswal criticized Canada for labeling India as an "adversary" in its National Cyber Threat Assessment, alongside nations like China and Russia, describing this as another unfounded attack aimed at discrediting India. He noted that high-ranking Canadian officials have confessed to seeking to manipulate global opinion against India.

Furthermore, Jaiswal revealed that some Indian consular officials in Canada have been informed of being under surveillance, which he deemed a serious violation of diplomatic norms and an act of intimidation. He expressed concern over the safety of Indian personnel amid rising extremism in Canada.

In light of recent developments, including the cancellation of Diwali celebrations by Canada’s opposition leader, Jaiswal remarked on the increasing intolerance in Canada. The diplomatic rift, which escalated after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's unsubstantiated claim linking India to the assassination of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, has led to the expulsion of several diplomats from both nations. The situation remains tense, with both sides engaging in sharp exchanges.
