AAP Leader Atishi Takes Oath As Delhi Chief Minister

AAP Leader Atishi Takes Oath As Delhi Chief Minister

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi today took oath as the new Chief Minister of Delhi, becoming the youngest to assume the post. Her swearing-in follows Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation after securing bail in the Delhi liquor policy case. The oath ceremony was a subdued affair, with the party's mood dampened by Kejriwal's departure.

Atishi’s cabinet includes notable figures such as Mukesh Ahlawat, a first-time MLA from Sultanpur Majra, alongside seasoned leaders like Gopal Rai, Imran Hussain, Kailash Gahlot, and Saurabh Bharadwaj, all of whom took oath as ministers. Before the ceremony, Atishi and her cabinet met with the outgoing Chief Minister, Mr. Kejriwal.

Atishi is Delhi's third woman Chief Minister, following in the footsteps of Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit. The Kalkaji MLA had previously held multiple portfolios in Kejriwal's government, particularly in education, where she was instrumental in driving reforms.

Her elevation comes at a critical time for AAP, with assembly elections looming early next year. Atishi now faces the challenge of fast-tracking several pending policies, including the Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana, Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0, and the doorstep delivery of services scheme. She must also prove her government’s majority in the 70-member assembly in a special session on September 26-27.

Despite the pressures of her new role, Atishi is no stranger to tough situations. She rose to prominence when she was inducted into the cabinet after the arrest of former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in connection with the liquor policy case. Having joined AAP in 2013, Atishi initially worked behind the scenes on education reforms before entering electoral politics in 2019. She won her first assembly election in 2020, representing the Kalkaji constituency.
