In a significant cabinet reshuffle in Tamil Nadu, three DMK MLAs were sworn in as ministers, and Chief Minister MK Stalin's son, Udhayanidhi Stalin, was elevated to the post of Deputy Chief Minister. This marks a major development in the state's political landscape, with Udhayanidhi becoming the third generation of the Karunanidhi family to hold a key position in the Tamil Nadu government.
While Udhayanidhi did not take the oath at today's ceremony, as he was already a minister, he was seen congratulating the newly sworn-in ministers at Raj Bhavan. Udhayanidhi's appointment has sparked criticism from opposition parties, including the AIADMK and BJP, who have accused the DMK of promoting dynastic politics. AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan referred to Udhayanidhi as a "prince," stating that the party's elevation of family members signals the decline of the DMK before the 2026 state polls. The BJP echoed similar sentiments, accusing the DMK of prioritizing family interests over public welfare.
Alongside this development, Senthil Balaji, a DMK leader who was recently released on bail after 15 months in jail for a money laundering case, was reinstated as Minister for Electricity, Excise, and Prohibition. His return to the cabinet is seen as a strong message to the BJP-led central government, with the DMK emphasizing that his arrest was politically motivated.
In addition, Govi Chezhian, SM Nasar, and R Rajendran took the oath as ministers today. Chezhian will oversee the Higher Education portfolio, Nasar becomes the Minorities Minister, and Rajendran will lead the Tourism department.
The reshuffle is viewed as a strategic move ahead of the 2026 elections, reinforcing the DMK’s stance amid ongoing political challenges.
