As the US Presidential election enters its final stretch, both Donald Trump and Kamala Harris are actively seeking voter support. Harris, emphasizing her background as a prosecutor, has highlighted her intent to hold the former president accountable for his alleged crimes. Meanwhile, Trump has made racially insensitive comments regarding Harris's heritage, questioning whether she identifies as "Indian or Black."
During the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago, Trump remarked, “I've known her a long time, indirectly, not directly very much, and she was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn't know she was Black until a number of years ago, when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black.” Despite the backlash, Trump shared a photo on Truth Social, emphasizing Harris’s Indian heritage and thanking her for the "nice picture."
Trump's history of racially charged attacks includes his false claims about Barack Obama’s birthplace and his misleading statements about Nikki Haley’s eligibility for the presidency based on her parents' citizenship. Harris, whose mother is Indian and father is Jamaican, aims to become the first Black woman and Asian-American president in US history. Her candidacy has energized Black voters and young people, demographics that Trump has also targeted.
Harris responded to Trump’s comments, calling them “the same old show” of divisiveness and disrespect. She emphasized that “The American people deserve better.” Recent polls indicate a tightening race, with a July Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll showing Harris leading Trump 48% to 47% in key states, and enjoying substantial support from Black voters
