Thousands Flee as Wildfires Devastate Los Angeles

Thousands Flee as Wildfires Devastate Los Angeles

Fierce wildfires fueled by relentless Santa Ana winds have engulfed the Los Angeles region, forcing tens of thousands to flee as towering flames consume homes and darken the skies with smoke. At least five lives have been lost, and three major fires—raging from the Pacific Coast to Pasadena—have stretched firefighting resources to their limits.

The Palisades fire, one of the most destructive in LA’s modern history, has left celebrities and residents alike devastated. Billy Crystal and his wife Janice lost their home of 45 years, where they raised their children and grandchildren. “Every inch of our house was filled with love,” the couple shared, heartbroken yet determined to rebuild. Other stars, including Mandy Moore and Paris Hilton, also reported losing cherished homes. Moore described the devastation in Altadena as "unimaginable," vowing solidarity with her community.

The latest outbreak, the Sunset fire, has prompted mandatory evacuations in the Hollywood Hills, including Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Mulholland Drive. Similar orders remain for areas near the Palisades, San Fernando Valley, and parts of Altadena. Uber has stepped in, offering free rides to evacuation centers with the code WILDFIRE25.

President Joe Biden has approved a federal disaster declaration, unlocking funds for temporary housing, uninsured property losses, and recovery efforts. Residents can apply for assistance through FEMA’s website or hotline.

Firefighting reinforcements have poured in from neighboring states, with teams from Oregon, Washington, Utah, and Arizona joining the battle. LA County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone acknowledged the critical support during an afternoon briefing.

Amid the chaos, resilience shines through. “Our community is broken but will rebuild together,” Moore wrote, echoing the sentiment of countless Angelenos rallying to support one another in the face of unparalleled destruction.
