Sandeep Ghosh Ex Principal Of Kolkata Hospital Arrested

Sandeep Ghosh Ex Principal Of Kolkata Hospital Arrested

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, following an intense two-week-long interrogation related to allegations of financial irregularities during his tenure. The arrest comes in the wake of a high-profile investigation that also involves the shocking rape and murder of a woman doctor at the same hospital last month.

Alongside Sandip Ghosh, the CBI has also arrested three others: Biplav Singha and Suman Hazara, vendors who supplied medicines to the hospital, and Afsar Ali, a security guard. These arrests are part of a broader investigation into corruption and financial misconduct within the hospital.

Ghosh's role has been under scrutiny since the discovery of the doctor's body on August 9. Despite being the head of the institution, he failed to file a First Information Report (FIR) immediately, a lapse questioned by many, including the Supreme Court. His subsequent transfer to another hospital shortly after his resignation, amid mounting public pressure, further fueled suspicions and led to widespread criticism of the state government. The Calcutta High Court suggested that Ghosh should go on a long leave instead of taking up a new post, highlighting the seriousness of the allegations against him.

The CBI began questioning Ghosh on August 16, lasting 10 to 14 hours each session. Following a court order, the CBI also took over the investigation into the financial irregularities, searching for Ghosh's residence on August 25, where they reportedly uncovered substantial evidence. Ghosh has since undergone two rounds of polygraph tests.

The accusations against Ghosh are grave, including the illegal sale of unclaimed corpses, trafficking of biomedical waste, and accepting bribes from students in exchange for passing exams. Akhtar Ali, the former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar Hospital, has also appealed to the High Court, requesting the Enforcement Directorate to investigate these allegations.

Ghosh has been suspended by the Indian Medical Association, and his brief appointment to Calcutta National Medical College was met with student protests, preventing him from assuming office. The arrests have not quelled the growing unrest among Bengal’s doctors and civil society, who continue to demand accountability, including the resignation of Kolkata Police Chief Vineet Goyal.

Bengal BJP Chief Sukanta Majumdar, in a video message, asserted that despite alleged efforts by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) to cover up the crimes, Ghosh's corruption would soon be fully exposed, marking this arrest as a pivotal step towards justice for the people of Bengal.
