Restaurant of the Week for Vegetarian DelightsIf you are looking for delicious vegetarian food, try out this new restaurant in Nehru Place, Delhi – Swad-Desh Videsh Ka. The restaurant has a big menu of delicious vegetarian delicacies. The reporter Muskaan Kathuria grabs a bite and tell us what all you can order.

If eating out is no fun for you as a vegetarian because all you get to choose from are boring dishes with paneer as their prime ingredient, this new restaurant called Swad-Desh Videsh Ka might be the solution.

It’s a casual restaurant in Nehru Place inspired from the décor of Irani cafés. The setting is bright, colourful and lifts up the mood as you wait for your food. Posters with Bollywood dialogues fit for foodies like “Swad se karenge sabka swagat” or “Ek extra papad ki keemat tum kya jano Ramesh Babu” are displayed on the walls and cane chairs make up the setting of the restaurant. Added to this mix is a medley of Bollywood songs that plays in the background and gives off an old world charm.  

“The restaurant is a fast casual dining restaurant for people, who are very specific about the excellent quality of vegetarian food and services. We believe in putting vegetables and tasty meals in the spotlight, featuring key sourced and seasonal ingredients. Every dish is of the finest taste and is served after an day’s work by the chefs,” said Dinesh Arora, the owner of the restaurant.

I tried out the dumplings in Manchurian sauce, which were turgid from the outside and immediately  melted in my mouth. Dipped in soy sauce and chopped onions, they completely transformed the way dumplings are served.  It lived up to our expectations. The tandoori mushrooms were a delight, nicely coated with a fine balance of spices, filled with cottage cheese and served with onions and mint chutney. Presented in a row of about 15 mushrooms and seasoned with coriander leaves, this dish looked like it wouldn’t be enough but it did the job of satisfying both visuallly and sensually. We absolutely recommend this one. The vegetarian Shami Kebabs were presented beautifully on petite rotis and were rounded in taste. Served with spicy mint chutney and onions on the side,

In the international section, you have a range of mezze platters and a pick of European, American, Asian, Mediterranean and Italian dishes, mostly a combination of dairy and other greens.

A good meal without a sumptuous dessert is incomplete. While they had a big dessert menu to choose from, their fusion dessert platter with moong dal halwa, gulab jamun, chocolate kulfi and brownie is perfect for a big foodie. This is meant to suit both Indian and Western palates. We particularly liked halwa which was mildly sweet and topped with pistachios. The kulfi had a Western twist to it as it was dipped in chocolate and was served over the appetising rabri.

The highlight of our experience at Swad was the wireless waiter system, which made sure that one doesn’t have to wave hands or shout out to get heard. They had little standees on each table with buttons to call the waiter.

Swad is good for a family outing or an evening with friends.
