Rekha Gupta took oath as the Chief Minister of Delhi on Thursday in a grand ceremony at Ramlila Maidan, marking a new chapter in the city’s governance. She becomes the fourth BJP leader and the second woman from the party to hold the post. Gupta is also Delhi’s fourth female Chief Minister, following Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit, and Atishi.
The oath-taking ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda, and key leaders from BJP-ruled states. Senior union ministers, including Rajnath Singh and Hardeep Singh Puri, were also present.
Six ministers were inducted into Gupta’s cabinet, including Parvesh Verma, who defeated AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency. Others sworn in were Kapil Sharma, Manjinder Sirsa, Ashish Sood, Pankaj Kumar Singh, and Ravinder Indraj Singh. Three more ministerial positions remain open.
In another key appointment, former Leader of the Opposition Vijender Gupta was named Speaker of the Delhi Assembly. His return comes a decade after he was physically removed from the House in a clash with AAP MLAs.
Gupta, a first-time MLA from Shalimar Bagh, emerged as an unexpected choice for the top post. Her selection was finalized after BJP's Parliamentary Board, led by PM Modi, held discussions with party MLAs. The decision was delayed as the party awaited Modi’s return from overseas engagements.
After being nominated, Gupta expressed gratitude to the BJP leadership and vowed to lead Delhi with “honesty, integrity, and dedication.” She pledged to focus on development, governance, and the welfare of all citizens, emphasizing her commitment to taking Delhi “to new heights.”
