Rahul Gandhi Vows to Stand by Northeast Communities

Rahul Gandhi Vows to Stand by Northeast Communities

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi declared his solidarity with the people of Assam, emphasizing his role as their "soldier in Parliament" and urging the Centre for immediate support. Visiting a flood relief camp in Fulertal, Cachar district, Gandhi called for comprehensive relief, rehabilitation, and a long-term water management authority for Northeast India to mitigate flood impacts.

He expressed deep sorrow over the devastation, including the tragic death of 8-year-old Avinash in Guwahati, and extended condolences to affected families. Gandhi highlighted the displacement of over 24 lakh people and criticized the BJP government for mismanaging flood relief despite promises of a flood-free Assam.

During his visit, Gandhi also met internally displaced people from Manipur at a camp in Thalain, Cachar. Assam Congress leaders briefed him on the ground situation, with state Congress president Bhupen Borah urging Gandhi to secure adequate relief from the Centre.

Borah criticized the double-engine BJP government for neglecting embankment repairs and securing insufficient flood relief funds from the Centre. He called for a pan-Northeast water management authority and immediate strengthening of flood management infrastructure. Gandhi, after his Assam visit, planned to continue his tour in Manipur.
