In Kolkata, the parents of a doctor who was brutally raped and murdered last month have accused the police of initially attempting to suppress the case. The 31-year-old doctor, who was on night duty at the time of the incident, was found dead at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. Her parents, speaking at a protest demanding justice, alleged that the authorities tried to conceal details of the crime.
"The police, from the outset, tried to hush up the case. We weren't allowed to see her body, and instead, we had to wait at the station while the body was taken for post-mortem," the victim's father said. He further claimed that a senior police official had offered them money, which they refused.
Protests have erupted across the state, with junior doctors at the hospital leading the demand for a thorough investigation. The victim's parents have joined these protests, standing in solidarity with those seeking justice for their daughter.
Kolkata Police has faced severe criticism from opposition parties and the public over its handling of the case. Questions have been raised about how the accused, Sanjoy Roy, had unrestricted access to all areas of the state-run hospital. Some reports suggest Roy had been illegally arranging hospital beds and services in exchange for bribes, raising concerns about deeper systemic issues.
Amid growing public outrage, slogans criticizing the police have circulated on social media, with protesters highlighting the need for accountability.
In response, the Calcutta High Court has transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). On Monday, the CBI arrested Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, in connection with alleged financial irregularities at the institution. Meanwhile, the West Bengal Assembly has passed an anti-rape bill, proposing the death penalty for rape convicts if the crime results in the victim’s death or leaves them in a vegetative state.
