PM Modi’s Historic Visit to Kuwait Focuses on Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on a landmark two-day visit to Kuwait, is set to meet Crown Prince Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah on Sunday, marking the first Indian prime ministerial visit to the Gulf nation in 43 years. Modi’s trip underscores India’s commitment to deepening relations with Kuwait, a vital trade partner and the sixth-largest supplier of crude oil, fulfilling 3% of India’s energy needs.

On Saturday, PM Modi attended the opening ceremony of the 26th Arabian Gulf Cup as the chief guest at Kuwait City’s Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium. The event allowed informal interactions with Kuwaiti leadership, including the Emir, the Crown Prince, and the Prime Minister. Later, he addressed a large gathering of the Indian diaspora at the “Hala Modi” event, celebrating their contributions to global growth and calling India a potential “skill capital of the world.”

“The relationship between India and Kuwait transcends diplomacy, rooted in shared civilization, trade, and cultural bonds,” Modi said, emphasizing the strong emotional connection between the two nations. He lauded the Indian community’s impact on Kuwaiti society, referring to them as a “mini-Hindustan.”

As part of his visit, Modi interacted with Indian workers at the Gulf Spic Labour Camp, highlighting his commitment to the welfare of Indian workers abroad. He also met with Kuwaiti translators of Indian epics and a 101-year-old former Indian diplomat, underscoring the cultural and historical ties between the two countries.

Before concluding his visit, Modi is expected to sign an MoU to boost bilateral cooperation and meet Kuwaiti Prime Minister Dr. Mohammed Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, followed by a joint media statement. This visit seeks to rejuvenate India-Kuwait ties, last reaffirmed during Indira Gandhi’s visit in 1981, and strengthen the longstanding partnership.
