Prime Minister Narendra Modi met U.S. Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard in Washington, D.C., to discuss strengthening India-U.S. intelligence cooperation, particularly in counter-terrorism, cybersecurity, and emerging threats.
Congratulating Gabbard on her confirmation as the nation’s top intelligence official, Modi acknowledged her long-standing support for India-U.S. ties. "Met USA’s Director of National Intelligence, @TulsiGabbard in Washington DC. Congratulated her on her confirmation. Discussed various aspects of the India-USA friendship, of which she’s always been a strong votary," Modi posted on X.
Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman from Hawaii and an Army National Guard veteran, was sworn in as DNI on Wednesday after a closely contested Senate confirmation vote of 52-48. Attorney General Pam Bondi administered the oath in the Oval Office, with President Donald Trump calling Gabbard "an American of extraordinary courage and patriotism."
The confirmation process had been contentious, with bipartisan skepticism about her suitability to lead the U.S. intelligence community. Addressing concerns, Gabbard vowed to restore public trust in intelligence agencies, stating, "The American people have very little trust in the intelligence community, largely due to its weaponization and politicization." She emphasized her commitment to refocusing intelligence efforts purely on national security.
Modi arrived in Washington on Wednesday evening after co-chairing the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris. His meeting with Gabbard is part of broader high-level engagements, including bilateral talks with President Trump at the White House on Thursday.
"Our nations will keep working closely for the benefit of our people and a better future for our planet," Modi stated on X. His visit underscores India's strategic commitment to strengthening security and intelligence partnerships with the U.S. amid evolving global challenges.
