PM Modi Gives Armed Forces Free Hand to Respond to Pahalgam Attack

PM Modi Gives Armed Forces Free Hand to Respond to Pahalgam Attack

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has granted the Indian armed forces full operational autonomy to determine the timing, strategy, and targets for a military response to the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 civilian lives. Sources confirmed the decision came after high-level deliberations with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan.

The Prime Minister reportedly reaffirmed the nation’s firm resolve to eliminate terrorism and expressed absolute confidence in the military’s capability to deliver a decisive blow.

Following the meeting, Home Minister Amit Shah and RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat also met the Prime Minister, signaling strong political backing for military action.

The attack, the deadliest since the Pulwama bombing in 2019, has been linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba through its proxy group, The Resistance Front. Intelligence agencies have provided evidence implicating Pakistan-based elements, prompting New Delhi to brief key international partners, including the US, Russia, China, and Japan.

India has already initiated significant diplomatic countermeasures. Visas issued to Pakistani nationals—excluding Hindus and long-term residents—have been revoked, and medical visas have also been cancelled. Thousands of Pakistanis have since exited India, many via the Attari-Wagah border crossing.

Further escalating tensions, India has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, a critical water-sharing agreement signed in 1960. Pakistan reacted angrily, labelling the move an "act of war" and retaliated by halting visas for Indians and freezing multiple bilateral agreements.

In a nationally broadcast address, PM Modi warned that the perpetrators of the Pahalgam massacre will face swift and irreversible justice. “The time has come to dismantle the last remnants of the terror network. The resolve of 140 crore Indians will ensure it,” he declared, setting the stage for a strong military and diplomatic offensive.
