PM Modi Chairs Top-Level Security Meet On Middle East Crisis

Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened an urgent meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) to address the escalating crisis in West Asia, following Iran's ballistic missile strike on Israel. The committee, comprising top ministers, including the Home Minister, Defence Minister, Foreign Minister, Finance Minister, and the National Security Adviser, discussed the potential repercussions of the conflict on India and the broader global landscape.

The crisis in West Asia, particularly between Israel and Iran, has raised concerns over its impact on global trade, especially oil supply routes and maritime navigation. India, a major trade player in the region, expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions and the potential for further destabilization. The CCS underscored the importance of maintaining stability in the region and stressed the need for all parties to resolve issues through diplomacy and dialogue to prevent the conflict from spreading further.

One of the key areas of concern for India is the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden trade routes, which have already been severely disrupted by Houthi militia activity. With Lebanon's Hezbollah, backed by Iran, having close ties with the Houthis, the potential for further disruptions remains high. These routes are vital for India, with 50% of its exports and 30% of imports passing through the Suez Canal. Any conflict escalation could lead to higher cargo freight tariffs and significant delays, affecting the overall global supply chain.

India's reliance on the Gulf for energy and trade also adds urgency to the situation. The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) accounts for 15% of India's total trade, with bilateral trade reaching $162 billion in 2023. Sectors such as energy, defense, security, and healthcare are heavily intertwined with the region.

As the conflict unfolds, India is bracing for potential disruptions in energy supplies and rising costs, while calling for urgent diplomatic efforts to avoid a wider regional crisis.
