Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Washington, D.C., for a crucial two-day visit, marking his first bilateral meeting with President Donald Trump since the latter's return to the White House last month. PM Modi’s visit comes amid U.S. trade policies imposing steep tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, a move that could impact Indian businesses.
During his stay at Blair House, the official U.S. presidential guesthouse, Modi received a warm welcome from the Indian-American community despite harsh weather conditions. Enthusiastic supporters greeted him with chants of "Bharat Mata ki Jai" and "Modi, Modi," waving Indian and American flags.
The discussions between Modi and Trump are expected to focus on trade, investment, energy, technology, defense cooperation, and immigration policies. The leaders will also deliberate on global issues, including the Indo-Pacific security landscape, the conflict in Ukraine, and developments in West Asia. Modi aims to prevent punitive trade measures against India while strengthening economic and strategic ties with Washington.
A key highlight of Modi’s visit is his scheduled meeting with billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk at the White House. The interaction is expected to explore potential collaborations in electric vehicles, space technology, and renewable energy. Modi will also engage with other top U.S. business leaders to enhance economic partnerships.
Apart from high-level discussions, Modi met U.S. Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard to discuss India-U.S. relations. His visit makes him the fourth foreign leader hosted by Trump after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, and Jordan’s King Abdullah II.
This marks Modi’s 10th visit to the U.S. as Prime Minister, underscoring the deepening ties between the two democracies. His first visit was in 2014 under then-President Barack Obama.
