Modi 3.0 first Economic Survey To Be Tabled In Parliament Today

The Union government will present the Economic Survey 2023-24 in both houses of Parliament today. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will table this pre-budget document, a day before the full Budget presentation for 2024-25. The Economic Survey will be presented in the Lok Sabha at 1 pm and in the Rajya Sabha at 2 pm, followed by a press conference by Chief Economic Adviser Anantha Nageswaran.

This year’s Budget is of significant interest as many major economies are struggling, while India remains the fastest-growing economy. The Economic Survey, prepared by the Economic Division of the Department of Economic Affairs under the chief economic adviser, provides insights into the state of the economy and various indicators for 2023-24 (April-March) along with some outlook for the current year.

The Survey serves as a report card on the economy, presenting the growth outlook and a detailed account of economic prospects and policy challenges. It includes statistical information and analysis on various sectors, covering employment, GDP growth, inflation, and the budget deficit.

The first Economic Survey was introduced in 1950 51 as part of the budget documents. In the 1960s, it was separated from the Budget documents and presented the day before the Union Budget.

The central theme of the Survey is a key point of interest. In 2022, the 'Agile Approach' theme focused on India’s economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, the theme was 'Recovery Complete', highlighting the economy’s recovery from pandemic-induced contraction, the Russian-Ukraine conflict, and inflation, returning to the pre-pandemic growth path.

The Survey typically includes sectoral chapters and new, need-based chapters addressing current issues. All eyes will be on the major announcements and the government's forward-looking guidance about the overall economy.

With this upcoming budget presentation, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will surpass the record set by former Prime Minister Morarji Desai, who presented five annual budgets and one interim budget. This will be Sitharaman’s seventh budget speech, surpassing the records of Manmohan Singh, Arun Jaitley, P. Chidambaram, and Yashwant Sinha, who each presented five budgets.
