Karnataka Mourns the Loss of Visionary Leader and Statesman SM Krishna

SM Krishna, a towering political leader and former Karnataka Chief Minister, passed away at the age of 92 early today at his Bengaluru residence. Known for transforming Bengaluru into a global tech hub, Krishna’s demise marks the end of an era. He had been unwell for some time.

Born on May 1, 1932, in Somanahalli, Mandya district, Krishna’s political career spanned over six decades. He started in 1962 as an Independent MLA from Maddur, later joining the Congress in 1971. Renowned for his administrative acumen, Krishna’s tenure as Karnataka CM from 1999 to 2004 is remembered for his visionary leadership in the IT and biotechnology sectors, propelling Bengaluru to international prominence.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow, calling Krishna a "remarkable leader" committed to public welfare. Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah lauded his unparalleled contributions to the state’s progress, particularly in technology and infrastructure. Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu reminisced about their shared competitive spirit in attracting investments.

An alumnus of Maharaja's College in Mysuru and the Government Law College in Bengaluru, Krishna furthered his education in the US at Southern Methodist University and George Washington University as a Fulbright Scholar. His political journey saw him hold diverse roles, including Union Minister for External Affairs from 2009 to 2012 and Governor of Maharashtra from 2004 to 2008.

Krishna joined the BJP in his later years but remained a beloved figure across party lines. His last rites, with full state honors, will be held tomorrow in Mandya. The Karnataka government has announced a three-day state mourning to honor his legacy.

SM Krishna will be remembered as a visionary who reshaped Karnataka’s identity and left an indelible mark on Indian politics.
