Joe Biden Announces Plans To Reform US Supreme Court

US President Joe Biden announced plans for urgent reforms to the conservative-dominated Supreme Court, in a bold but long-shot move as he seeks to make a mark in his last six months in power. The 81-year-old Democrat is calling for a constitutional amendment to reverse the Supreme Court's recent ruling backing Donald Trump's claims of presidential immunity, according to the White House.

Biden also proposes term limits for Supreme Court justices, who currently serve for life, following controversial rulings such as the repeal of the nationwide right to abortion. He plans to further unveil the reforms in a speech in Austin, Texas. These plans, confirmed during an Oval Office address last week, face significant challenges in a deeply divided Congress.

"This nation was founded on a simple yet profound principle: No one is above the law. Not the president of the United States. Not a justice on the Supreme Court of the United States. No one," Biden wrote in an opinion piece published Monday. He emphasized that current events undermine public confidence in the court's decisions.

Biden's frustration with a court packed with Trump-appointed judges is reflected in these proposed reforms, which come amid growing public dissatisfaction with the institution. The White House stated that both Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, now the presumptive Democratic nominee, "look forward to working with Congress" on the reforms.

Among the proposals, Biden suggests 18-year term limits for Supreme Court justices, with new appointments every two years. He also seeks a "binding, enforceable" ethics code similar to those for federal judges. The court, with a 6-3 conservative majority, has dealt Biden several blows, including overturning the 1973 Roe v Wade ruling and supporting Trump's immunity claims.

Ethics scandals have also plagued the court, with Justice Clarence Thomas admitting to luxury vacations paid for by a billionaire Republican donor and Justice Samuel Alito facing calls to recuse himself from Trump-related cases. Legal expert Steven Schwinn warned that Biden's plan has a "close to zero" chance of passing but suggested it might aim to "raise public consciousness" and make the Supreme Court an election issue.
