Israel’s military announced that a strike carried out three months ago successfully killed three senior Hamas leaders in Gaza. Among them was Rawhi Mushtaha, the head of the Hamas government in the Gaza Strip and a key figure in the group's military strategy. According to Israeli sources, Mushtaha was instrumental in decisions regarding Hamas' force deployments and was considered a "right-hand man" to Yahya Sinwar, Hamas's top leader in Gaza.
Mushtaha was designated as a "specially designated global terrorist" by the U.S. State Department in 2015. He also played a significant role in managing Hamas’ financial affairs, according to the European Council on Foreign Relations. In the same strike, Israeli forces also killed Sameh al-Siraj, who managed security for Hamas' political bureau, and Sami Oudeh, a commander who led the group’s internal security operations.
This operation is part of Israel’s broader military campaign aimed at dismantling Hamas' leadership and infrastructure following the group’s October 7 attack, which killed 1,205 people in Israel. Since then, Israel has conducted a sustained military offensive in Gaza, killing over 41,000 people according to the Hamas-run health ministry. The UN has described these figures as reliable, though the high civilian toll has raised international concerns. Nonetheless, Israel’s military campaign has severely weakened Hamas, killing numerous leaders and fighters while causing significant destruction across Gaza.
