Interim Government in Bangladesh to be Announced Today

The Bangladeshi parliament is set to be dissolved today, following the resignation and departure of Sheikh Hasina, as well as the military's takeover amid widespread protests.

Late last evening, Bangladeshi President Mohammed Shahabuddin chaired a crucial meeting to discuss forming a military-backed caretaker government. Attendees included Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman, the heads of the navy and air force, and top leaders from various opposition parties, including the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami. General Waker-Uz-Zaman is scheduled to meet with student protest leaders as the country awaits the formation of a new government. The student leaders, who initiated the movement against job quotas that evolved into a demand for Hasina’s resignation, are advocating for Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus to be appointed as the chief advisor of the interim government.

In a national address yesterday, General Waker announced Hasina’s resignation and the formation of an interim government by the military. "The country has suffered significantly, the economy has been damaged, and many lives have been lost—it is time to end the violence," he stated.

Sheikh Hasina, daughter of Bangladesh's founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was reportedly given a 45-minute ultimatum to resign. After stepping down, the 76-year-old, accompanied by her younger sister Sheikh Rehana, departed Dhaka in a military aircraft for India. Upon landing at Hindon Air Force Base in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad, she met with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. Hasina is expected to travel to London, where she may seek political asylum.

Today, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar chaired an all-party meeting to discuss the collapse of the Hasina government and the military’s takeover in Bangladesh amid violent protests. Jaishankar briefed party leaders on the situation in the unrest-hit nation and outlined the steps taken by the Indian government.

Western powers have called for calm in Bangladesh following Hasina's departure. The United States urged all parties to "refrain from further violence," while UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for a "peaceful, orderly, and democratic transition."

Hasina had been attempting to quell nationwide protests since early July. However, after brutal unrest on Sunday, which resulted in nearly 100 deaths, she fled the country. The death toll since the beginning of the anti-government demonstrations has now surpassed 300. The protests, which began in June over student demands to abolish a controversial quota system in government jobs, escalated into a broader movement calling for the end of Hasina's rule.
