India wants to connect with everyone: Modi

India wants to connect with everyone: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently on a landmark visit to Poland, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in over four decades. The last such visit was by Morarji Desai in 1979. Addressing a gathering of the Indian diaspora in Warsaw, PM Modi humorously noted that this visit, along with his recent trip to Austria—another first in four decades—had made headlines back home. "It is my good fortune to bring about many firsts," he quipped, eliciting laughter and cheers from the audience.

PM Modi attributed these historic visits to a fundamental shift in India's foreign policy. "For decades, India's policy was to maintain distance from all countries," he said, subtly criticizing the Non-Aligned Movement of the 1970s. He highlighted that the current approach is vastly different: "Today's India wants to connect with everyone... Today's India is with everyone and thinks about everyone's benefit. Today, the world respects India as Vishwa Bandhu (friend to all)."

This visit to Poland underscores India's growing engagement with Europe and the Middle East. Over the past years, PM Modi has prioritized forging closer ties with numerous nations, including Israel, marking significant shifts in diplomatic relations. His current visit to Poland coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Poland has become a key economic partner for India in Central Europe. According to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, bilateral trade between the two nations is substantial, amounting to approximately $6 billion, making Poland India’s largest trading partner in Central and Eastern Europe. Indian investments in Poland are estimated at around $3 billion, with Polish investments in India around $1 billion.

As part of his broader diplomatic efforts, PM Modi is also set to visit Ukraine, where he is expected to play a peacemaking role amid ongoing conflicts, further demonstrating India’s active participation on the global stage.
