In a decisive military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 civilian lives, India carried out coordinated precision strikes early Tuesday targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK). The joint operation by the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force began at 1:44 AM under the codename Operation Sindoor.
Sources confirmed that nine key terror hubs were hit, including locations in Kotli, Muzaffarabad, Bahawalpur, and Muridke—the latter being Lashkar-e-Taiba's headquarters. The Indian Air Force deployed SCALP (Storm Shadow) cruise missiles and Hammer Smart Bombs, launched by Rafale jets, to conduct the high-precision assault.
India emphasized the strikes were "focused, measured, and non-escalatory," carefully avoiding Pakistani military installations. The government said the operation was the first phase of its response and that further action would depend on Pakistan’s conduct.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi monitored the operation closely, following a series of high-level meetings with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and the three service chiefs. Earlier diplomatic measures included suspending the Indus Waters Treaty and revoking all Pakistani visas.
Pakistan retaliated with cross-border shelling in the Rajouri-Poonch region, killing three civilians. Its Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called India's actions an “act of war” and vowed retaliation. Meanwhile, flight operations across northern India were disrupted, and airspace restrictions remain in place.
International reaction has been measured, with the US expressing hope for de-escalation. PM Modi stated that India's actions reflect restraint, but justice was necessary. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh posted "Bharat Mata Ki Jai," and the Indian Army declared on X: "Justice is served. Jai Hind."
A nationwide civil defence drill—the first since 1971—is underway across 244 districts.
