India-Brunei elevate bilateral ties to ‘Enhanced Partnership'

India and Brunei elevated their bilateral relationship to an “Enhanced Partnership” during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic visit to the Southeast Asian nation. Modi, the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Brunei on a bilateral mission, was warmly welcomed by Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah at Istana Nurul Iman, the Sultan’s official residence and the seat of the Brunei government.

The discussions between the two leaders were comprehensive, covering key areas such as defense, trade, energy, space technology, and health. They also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest. This milestone in India-Brunei relations comes as both nations celebrate 40 years of diplomatic ties, a "happy coincidence" noted by Prime Minister Modi in his remarks. He emphasized Brunei's importance in India's Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific Vision, expressing confidence that the visit would provide strategic direction to the partnership.

Modi highlighted the deep cultural linkages that have connected India and Brunei for centuries, serving as the foundation of their bilateral friendship. He also extended warm wishes to the Sultan and the people of Brunei on their 40th Independence Day, symbolizing the strong bond between the two nations.

Following the talks, Modi expressed his optimism on social media, stating, “Delighted to meet His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah. Our talks were wide-ranging and included ways to further cement bilateral ties between our nations. We are going to further expand trade ties, commercial linkages, and people-to-people exchanges.”

Modi’s visit to Brunei marks a significant step in strengthening India’s relations with this important partner in the Indo-Pacific region. Before departing for Singapore, the Prime Minister also visited the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque and inaugurated the new chancery premises of the High Commission of India, where he engaged with the Indian diaspora.
