Hezbollah Leader Nasrallah’s Death: Israel Cheers, Iran in Mourning

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed on Saturday that he had personally authorized the operation to eliminate Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut. Nasrallah, 64, was killed as Israeli airstrikes targeted Hezbollah positions in southern and eastern Lebanon, following heavy rocket fire from the group into northern Israel. Overnight, Israeli jets bombarded Hezbollah strongholds in southern Beirut, destroying multiple residential buildings.

Netanyahu described Nasrallah's death as a significant milestone in Israel’s security strategy and a key step in stabilizing the northern border. Speaking to the nation, he emphasized that Nasrallah had orchestrated numerous terrorist attacks against Israelis and foreign nationals over the years, including the infamous 1983 bombings in Beirut that killed 63 people at the U.S. embassy and hundreds of U.S. Marines and French paratroopers.

"The death of this terrorist is crucial for crippling Hezbollah’s capabilities," Netanyahu said, adding, "As long as Nasrallah lived, he could rapidly rebuild what we worked to dismantle."

Netanyahu hailed the operation as settling a long-standing score with Nasrallah for the deaths of countless Israelis, Americans, and other foreign nationals. He further noted that Nasrallah’s elimination would weaken Hamas, Hezbollah’s ally in Gaza, potentially improving the chances of securing the release of hostages taken by Hamas in the October 7 attack on Israel.

In addition to praising Israel’s military and intelligence agencies—IDF, Mossad, and Shin Bet—Netanyahu issued a stark warning to Iran. "Nasrallah’s death should serve as a reminder to Tehran and its proxies that Israel’s reach extends across the region. Whoever tries to defeat us, we will defeat them," he said.

Netanyahu concluded by pledging unity in the fight to protect Israel’s security, return displaced residents, and bring all abducted Israelis back home safely. "We will win together," he affirmed.
