Hasina Devastated by Chaos in Bangladesh: Saima Wazed

Hasina Devastated by Chaos in Bangladesh: Saima Wazed

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's daughter expressed her heartbreak over not being able to see and hug her mother amid the turmoil in Bangladesh. "Heartbroken with the loss of life in my country Bangladesh that I love. So heartbroken that I cannot see and hug my mother during this difficult time. I remain committed to my role as RD," Saima Wazed, the Regional Director for South-East Asia at the World Health Organisation (WHO), wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Hasina, 76, was forced to resign as Prime Minister after weeks-long protests over a jobs quota killed over 400 people. She fled Dhaka in a military aircraft for India after reportedly being given a 45-minute ultimatum by the Bangladesh Army.

Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said the Indian government is giving Hasina time to recover and decide her next move. Speculations about her seeking sanctuary in London were dismissed by her son Sajeeb Wazed, who also denied reports of her requesting asylum in the UK or US.

Sajeeb Wazed expressed concern over attacks on his mother's party leaders and minorities, comparing Bangladesh's future to Syria. Muhammad Yunus, Nobel-winning microfinance pioneer, has been named head of the military-backed interim government, with an advisory council potentially including 15 members.
