FM Jaishankar Set to Visit Pakistan for SCO Summit in October

India announced on Friday that External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will visit Pakistan in mid-October to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of Government (CHG) summit, marking a significant diplomatic step. The meeting is scheduled for October 15-16 in Islamabad, with Jaishankar leading the Indian delegation.

The last Indian external affairs minister to visit Pakistan was Sushma Swaraj in 2015. The decision for Jaishankar's visit highlights India’s commitment to the SCO, an influential regional bloc focused on economic and security cooperation. The visit comes despite the strained relations between India and Pakistan, which have deteriorated since India’s 2019 airstrike on a Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist camp in Balakot following the Pulwama terror attack. Further tensions arose when India revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019.

India has consistently maintained that it seeks peaceful neighborly relations with Pakistan but insists that Islamabad must create a terror-free environment for dialogue. Jaishankar’s participation in the SCO summit underscores New Delhi's focus on multilateral diplomacy and regional security cooperation.

The SCO, founded in 2001 by China, Russia, and four Central Asian nations, now includes India and Pakistan as permanent members since 2017. India's engagement with the bloc has deepened, especially in the areas of security and counterterrorism through the SCO’s Regional Anti-Terrorism Structure (RATS). As a key player in the SCO, India continues to strengthen its ties within this multilateral framework, which includes China, Russia, and several Central Asian nations.
