Exiled Sheikh Hasina Vows To Return To Bangladesh

Exiled former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has accused interim leader Muhammad Yunus of orchestrating a violent conspiracy to remove her from power, calling him a “mobster” who has unleashed “terrorists” on the country. In response, Dhaka has reaffirmed its commitment to securing Hasina’s extradition from India, declaring it a top priority.

Hasina, who fled to India after being ousted in a student-led uprising on August 5, 2024, held a Zoom call on Monday with the widows of four policemen killed during last year’s protests. Expressing her condolences, she vowed to return and seek justice. "The killings were part of a meticulous plot to overthrow me," she said, alleging that Yunus had dissolved all investigative committees into the deaths. She further claimed she narrowly escaped an assassination attempt during the uprising.

Last year’s protests, initially against a controversial quota system, escalated into a nationwide movement demanding Hasina’s resignation. Over 450 police stations were set on fire during the unrest, and Yunus has since admitted there was a "design and conspiracy" behind her removal.

“The people must rise against this illegitimate government,” Hasina said. “The human rights violations under Yunus have been unprecedented. He must be held accountable.”

In response to her remarks, the interim administration in Dhaka reiterated its determination to extradite Hasina. “Bringing her back to face trial is our topmost priority,” said government spokesperson Shafiqul Alam on Tuesday. He emphasized that Bangladeshis would decide the fate of the Awami League, but those responsible for past crimes must be prosecuted.

Dhaka also cited a UN report accusing Hasina’s administration of human rights abuses, increasing pressure on India to respond to its extradition request. New Delhi has acknowledged receiving a diplomatic note but has yet to issue a formal reply.
