Electoral Cliffhanger: Harris vs. Trump in a Fight for Every Vote

Kamala Harris’ lead over Donald Trump has narrowed significantly as the November 5 election approaches, with a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll indicating she is ahead by just one percentage point, 44% to 43%. This three-day poll, completed on Sunday, shows the race essentially tied, with a margin of error of about three points.

Since Harris entered the race in July, she has consistently led in polls, but her advantage has diminished since late September. A previous poll from mid-October had her leading by two points. The latest survey, which included 1,150 U.S. adults and 975 registered voters, highlights Trump’s strengths on key issues. Voters favored Trump over Harris regarding the economy, with 47% supporting him compared to 37% for her. Economic concerns topped the list of pressing issues for 26% of respondents.

Trump also holds a significant lead on immigration, where 48% preferred his approach versus 33% for Harris. Harris’s advantage on political extremism has also declined; 40% of voters believe she has a better strategy for handling it, a decrease from a previous seven-point lead.

In her campaign, Harris has focused on Trump’s involvement in the January 6 Capitol attack, aiming to rally support against what she calls threats to democracy. Conversely, Trump has portrayed Harris’s policies as extreme, suggesting they could lead to a socialist takeover.

As both candidates gear up for the final stretch, mobilizing their voter bases will be crucial. While 89% of registered Democrats and 93% of Republicans expressed certainty about voting, the overall turnout in 2020 was 66%, highlighting the importance of engagement in this tightly contested race.
