Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will return to her country when the new caretaker government decides to hold elections, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy has stated. Hasina fled to India after weeks of violent protests led to her resignation. A caretaker government, headed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, was sworn in to oversee the upcoming elections.
Speaking to the Times of India, Joy, who is based in the US, said, "For now, she [Hasina] is in India. She will return to Bangladesh as soon as the interim government schedules the election."
Hasina's Awami League party is not part of the interim government, following a student-led uprising against her leadership that resulted in nationwide violence, leaving around 300 people dead and thousands injured. She is currently staying in a safe house near New Delhi. While Indian media speculates that she may seek asylum in Britain, the British Home Office has not commented.
Joy hinted at a possible political role for himself, stating, "I am sure the Awami League will participate in the election, and we might even win."
