A Firm Handshake Is the Sine Qua To Get Hitched To a New Relationshipby Opinion Express May 1, 2018 0 comments
According to researchers from Colombia University’s School of Public Health, if you want to get connected to a new relationship or want to get married, stay firm in handshake. A firm handshake can do wonders for you.
For all the men who are looking to get married, here’s something to think about: Stay firm. No, it’s not what you think and no, that either, you juveniles. According to researchers from Colombia University’s School of Public Health, a firm handshake is the sine qua non for men who are looking to, to use a phrase from pre-political correctness days, settle down. Women, it seems, are more likely to marry men with a strong grip; literally, in this case, but also on reality, we hasten to add. Of course, as any couples’ therapist or indeed your neighborhood agony aunt/uncle will tell you, being firm is different from being unbending.
But back to the handshake. A survey of 5,000 adults in the Norwegian city of Tromso is the empirical basis for the Colombia University researchers’ finding that flimsy and/or weak handed males far less likely to be married than their counterparts with a strong hand clasp. But the same was not found to be true for women. The findings of the study, published in the respected journal SSM-Population Health, was based on analyzing the “grip strength” of the men participating in the survey with a device known as the ‘vigorimeter’. Women, it emerged, saw grip strength as a marital benefit. In fact, according to a report in The Independent, Harvard University Medical School has flagged grip strength as a useful tool in determining an individual’s risk of heart attack or stroke as it indicates weaker muscle strength.
The bottom line, though, seems to be that a strain of the hunter-gatherer-provider role of the male of the species still attracts women at a subliminal genetic level given the premium placed on a firm handshake signaling vigor and vitality. Physical attributes, it cannot be denied, do play a vital role in the levels of attraction between men and women and the projection of strength in a civilized way, which is through a handshake, is the perhaps the best way of exhibiting it. But for heaven’s sake, over-enthusiastic men, please don’t do go around using this piece of research as an excuse to deliver bone-crushing handshakes. If you do, you are far more likely to be left wringing your hands in despair at the speed at which women, not to mention men, who are the unfortunate recipients of such will disappear! Our suggestion: When you meet the One, as it were, look her in the eye, deliver a firm but not prolonged handshake and trust your luck to do the rest. Oh, and be forever grateful.
